First Offical Day of Winter in Washington DC - Snow Abound!

Today is Monday, January 15th, 2024. It's Martin Luther King Jr Day and also the first day of snow. According to the locals, the last time it snowed in Washington, DC was two years ago in 2022.

For not snowing for that long, the snow was hard. The snow lasted all day and continued into the night. It's piling higher and higher with a grand white blanket that will grow and blossom beautiful snowflakes.

Snow to me is very romantic. It's so beautiful in person and can (literally) take your breath away. The snow is not powdery but more crunchy upon impact. It's not soft or thin but thick, heavy, and icy cold to the touch. But when capturing snow with a camera, the magic is revealed to be mystical. Bold. Enticing.

Snow is a character. With bright lights, it can be playful and inviting, like a living snowman to children in cartoons. In a dark and ominous tone, it can be frightening and dangerous, a beast amid nature. When walking into the landscape, it attacks my nose and mouth till they are red and puffy in repeated succession, I wrap my body in insulated and fleece-lined garb to honor the conditions the elements have placed upon us. Frigid, icy, playful weather.

Again, this is just the first day. Who knows how long this weather will take hold of Washington, DC. So, I will remain wary while looking forward to capturing Mother Nature's alluring but deadly winter makeup.
