Reflection for 2023

Home is a place of peace and happiness, and it is there for everyone.” - Cuong Lu, author of The Buddha in Jail: Restoring Lives, Finding Hope, and Freedom

This was one of my favorite quotes from a book I read this year. I highly recommend it :)

Today is the last day of 2023 and what a time it was for me. If I were to ask a crystal ball what this year would have involved, I wouldn't still be able to predict what has happened to me:

  • Moving to a new state and on top of that, moving in with my partner (Yay!!)

  • Exploring the historical monuments in Washington, DC

  • Going after my career dreams and goals

  • Getting back into dance and performing since my college days

  • Participating in the Pride Parade and Star Wars Day for the first time

  • Attending a wedding that was in another state (a highlight of this year probably)

  • Experiencing the Corpse Flower Bloom!

  • EXPONENTINAL GROWTH!!

With the year over and another around the corner, many people are thinking about their 2024 New Year's resolutions. I prefer to do a New Year's goal instead as it makes me feel secure that my goals can change, grow, and adapt to my needs throughout the year. For 2023, my New Year's goal was to be patient with myself. This mostly meant regarding my work goals to feel at peace when I didn't land my dream job as quickly as I wanted to. This did take a lot of me to show compassion if I were honest. Since finishing a postgraduate master’s degree, I struggled with feelings of imposter syndrome. I always have been a go-getter and believe when you put your full attention onto a problem, you can achieve anything. However, upon reflection, I can understand and accept my feelings as being too ambitious and putting too much focus on other people's perspectives of myself while placing additional pressure to be "perfect." This led me to lose sight of what I needed to do: give myself time and wait for the opportunities to show themselves.

With the new year coming up, I want to add another goal to the 2024 list. In the picture above is a sticker that's also a suncatcher with the words "TAKE UP SPACE." This was sent to me as a gift from my best friend after I told her about my anxieties regarding putting myself first and taking up space. So, I will make sure that I will make my voice heard, whether for myself or when around others. I wish everyone a happy New Year and success with reaching their goals or resolutions in 2024!
